Study Objectives

The objectives of the study are to develop overarching water resource balance perspectives for South Africa, disaggregated at water management level, and aligned to various water supply reconciliation strategies of both small and large water systems. The specific objectives of the study are as follows:

  • Collate, develop and update information on alternative water sources (e.g. desalination of sea water, water reuse, managed aquifer recharge, new groundwater exploitation and virtual water at national level).
  • Develop and apply Decision Support System (DSS) tools that will assist decision makers to access national water balance information.
  • Assess the remaining potential for water resource development and means to extend the effectiveness of the resources.
  • Provide an inventory of current and planned water resources infrastructure projects, including a review of their status and provision of recommendations for additional uses where applicable.
  • Provide socio-economic evaluations of identified interventions and strategies.
  • Estimate impacts of Climate Change (CC) and non-climatic factors on system yield.
